Chapter 8 Guidance

What is Chapter 8?

Chapter 8 refers literally to chapter 8 of the Department of Transport Documentation Traffic Signs Manual. It details the requirements for signage, markings and safety guidelines for temporary traffic management situations on highways. This guide will focus on parts related to vehicles stopping on high speed roads specified chapter 8 of the document.

Is Chapter 8 legislation?

Vehicle chevrons related to Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual are not legal requirements in England but are considered best practice, whereas vehicle markings are required in Scotland & Wales.

Whilst Chapter 8 is not legislation, it is considered best practice with most organisations ensuring all their vehicles have the relevant conspicuity markings.

How to comply with Chapter 8

Compliance varies depending on the type of vehicle, ranging from cars & vans (under 7.5 tonnes) to recovery trucks & road sweepers (over 7.5 tonnes) and if the vehicle has a specific function such as Incident / Mobile Support.

For vehicles under 7.5 tonnes to comply with Chapter 8 guidance, the rear markings need to be upward facing stripes in alternating red and yellow materials measuring no less than 150mm in width and no greater than 200mm as much of the rear of the vehicle must be covered as possible. The red or orange material needs to be retro-reflective to maximise visibility at night with the yellow material being non-reflective for daytime visibility. Vehicles should also display “Highway Maintenance” or “Motorway Maintenance” sign in non-reflective black and have 50mm side markings in yellow microprismatic material plus any leading edges must be marked with reflective strips.

Directional ArrowIn addition to the above, vehicles over 7.5 tonnes must also include a directional arrow incorporating flashing lights to supplement the message to keep left/right and rear marker chevron boards.
