The 1st of March marks the new year for registrations and sees the release of the new DVLA number plates in the UK. The new number plates enter circulation each year in March and September and the registration numbers are used to identify when a car was registered.

What do the numbers and characters on a number plate mean?

The current format of licence plates came into force in 2001. The number plate is divided into three sections.

The first two letters on a number plate are the regional identifiers. The first letter stands for the local area and the second letter refers to the DVLA office the registration took place at. The two numbers that follow are the age identifier of the car, which shows when the car was registered. Then the final three letters are just a random combination.

    • Reflective Film –Class R3B is the higher specification of reflectivity and is used for permanent signage for roads as well as safety and warning markings on emergency service vehicles
    • Suitable for stopping on highways with passing traffic up to and over 50 mph
    • Airflow technology – this helps to speed the application process and helps reduce the risk of microbubbles by helping air escape, giving a flawless finish and reducing the application time by up to 60%
    • Visibility up to 1000 metres, which exceeds the minimum requirements for Scotland & Wales
    • Up to 5 years’ service life
